Enugu Air passengers survived a major scare as their aircraft overrun the runway at Benin Airport while landing, but thank goodness, there were no injuries or fatalities.
The Airline confirmed this some hours ago, noting that one of its aircraft operating from Lagos to Benin experienced a runway incursion after landing today.
“We confirm that all passengers and crew have safely disembarked and there were no injuries or casualties”, the airline said in an unsigned statement.
The aircraft had 63 passengers and five crew members on board the flight.
It added that the aircraft, Embraer E170, has been secured and the relevant aviation authorities informed in line with established procedures.
An assessment of the aircraft and circumstances surrounding the occurrence is currently underway, Enugu Air disclosed.
However, the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau has begun probing the runway incursion by the Enugu Air aircraft.
NSIB’s Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, said in a statement that “The NSIB’s Go Team was mobilised and on the ground at the occurrence site within minutes of notification.”
She added that the “team is gathering and preserving evidence, interviewing flight crew and other relevant personnel, examining the aircraft, assessing runway conditions, and reviewing all other relevant operational and technical information to determine the circumstances and contributing factors to the occurrence”.
Enugu Air management cautioned that due to the accident, there may be temporary adjustments to some of its flight schedules. But it assured that “Passengers affected by any changes will be contacted directly and provided with the necessary assistance”.
The airline reiterated that the safety of passengers, crew, and operations remains its highest priority.
