Fire guts tank farm with 6 000MT of petrol in Lagos

One of the major petroleum products’ tank farms in Lagos, has been razed, an incident that created pandemonium among residents of Apapa area of the city.

The tank farm belonging to OVH Energy but was branded in Oando’s name and logo is located at Marine beach, few meters from other petroleum products storage facilities in the area.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the fire incident noting that fire fighters and equipment from three centres – Federal Fire, NIMASA FIRE Services and Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Services, NIPCO have been mobilised.

Spokesperson for NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident said that all staff on site have been evacuated and safe.

“NPA, Federal Fire and NIMASA FIRE Services have been mobilised and are fighting the fire presently,” he declared.

According to Farinloye, the tank has 6,000 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), known as petrol, trapped.

It is located within the same vicinity housing five other tanks one of which has aviation fuel.

He said all tanks have been shut down to suffocate and facilitate prompt fire-fighting.

There are 20 fire tenders attending to the incident at the time of this report.
