The Agriculture Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ACAN) has elected new executives to steer the affairs of the Association for the next two years.
The election which took place over the weekend saw Mr. Collins Nnabuife of the Tribune Newspapers emerged as the new chairman of ACAN. He takes over from Mr. John Oba who has served out his term.
Others elected are, Ms Anietie Patrick from Core TV, as vice chairman; Oluwaseun Ayeni, an editor with Food Farm Newspaper, as Secretary; Juliana Agbo of The Nation Newspaper as Welfare/PRO and Caleb Onwe of New Telegraph Newspaper as the Treasurer of the Association
Founded in 2012 with over 20 members representing different frontline media houses, ACAN has been in the forefront of reporting agriculture with the objective of projecting and drawing attention to the sector for more government and private investments.
The Chairman of the electoral committee, and the business editor with the Punch Newspaper, Mr Nnodim Victor, while congratulating the newly elected executives, charged them to work together as a team to move the Association forward.
He also called on the executives to ensure that all members of the association are carried along in all the activities.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman of the Association, Mr Nnabuife, promised to embark on repositioning ACAN and make it viable to cater for the welfare of members.
According to him, “First of all we will reposition the association, revitalize it and make it viable, we are going to ensure that the welfare of our members is given priority in all our dealings.
“Most importantly we cover agriculture, we will always maintain our mandate which is to cover the agricultural sector very well and do what we call developmental journalism.
“More importantly we are going to work with government not as slaves but as stakeholders, where they go wrong we point it to them and where they need advice we advise them, and we are going to partner with both the private and public sectors to ensure that there is food on the table of every Nigerian, that is our mandate. And we are going to also make the association an association that will be reckoned with by both the international and the local bodies.”
