After withstanding Cameroun’s onslaught for the better part of the game and series of tame shots at goal, Nigeria’s Super Falcons managed by former Nigerian international, Florence Omagbemi, found the net after 84 minutes through E A Guincamp striker Desire Oparanozie.

From the very start, Cameroun piled on the pressure and Nigeria goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan made two excellent saves to keep the Camerounians at bay in the first half. Nigeria’s Ohale, Njoku and Captain Chikwelu had to put up brave displays in defence to thwart series of attacks by the rampaging Camerounians.

The second half started with the Camerounians looking the more likely side to score, but their finishing remained their undoing. Their striker, Gabrielle Onguene, mazed past several Nigeian defenders but fired wide from close range.

The Camerounians, playing at home, kept Nigeria’s star striker Asisat Oshoala, quiet for the better part of the game. In effect, Cameroun cut the supply line to Oshoala, and she appeared frustrated leading the attacking line for Nigeria.

Cameroun were expectedly, very physical, and their game plan appeared to be working as they made Nigeria unable to play any meaningful passing game.

However, Oparanozie collected the ball after a misjudged clearance by a Cameronian defender, to slot the ball calmly past the Cameroun goalkeeper with her left leg.

Cameroun tried to get back into the game, but the Nigerians stood their ground, to retain the Women African Cup of Nations at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde, Cameroun. Nigeria played badly but nonetheless, had the result.

The Super Falcons have now bettered their championship record by winning the tournament for a record eight times.
