As the race for the Senate Presidency gets to a crescendo today, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has put its weight behind the candidacy of Senator Ali Ndume.
The PDP also endorsed Honourable Umar Mohammed Bago for Speaker of House of Representatives in the 9th National Assembly.
It was understood that the main opposition party remarked that the PDP endorsed the two candidates after wide-reaching consultations with various stakeholders including party leaders, governors, among others.
The PDP’s endorsed candidates would face stiff contest from two candidates being supported by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the persons of Senator Ahmad Lawan and Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila.
It is interesting to note that all the contestants are from the ruling APC, a scenario which is expected to make the contest very exciting.
The Clerk of the National Assembly will conduct elections to the two positions today, and winners will be declared on the basis of those who scored the highest number of valid votes cast.
PDP national secretary, Senator Umar Ibrahim Tsauri, said the decision was taken in the best interest of the nation and democracy, noting that it would engender a stronger and independent legislature and help separation of powers to flourish.
He urged all PDP senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect to be guided by the party’s position while casting their votes today in Abuja.
The key officers of the Senate and House of Representatives will be elected through secret ballot process.
