Tottenham Hotspurs have relieved Jose Mourinho of his job as manager of the London club barely 17 months on the saddle.
The club announced his sack this morning, even though Mourinho has over one year remaining on his contract.
Tottenham former player, Ryan Mason, was named as his replacement with immediate effect.
Mourinho’s sack did not come as a surprise going by his poor run of results in the club this season.
Tottenham played a 2 – 2 draw with Everton on Friday in what is now Mourinho’s last game in charge at the club.
He lost a total of 10 matches this season alone, his worst career run in a club. The poor run included losses to teams like West Ham, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc.
The club chairman, Daniel Levy, in a statement noted that “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club”; adding: “Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.
“On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.
“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
Tottenham hired Mourinho to replace Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs manager in November 2019 and he worked hard to get the club on 6th position on the league standings last season.
The club is now occupying the 7th position on the log, and they have lost more points from a wining position than any other club in the Premiere League this season. It lost a total of 20 points this season from a wining position.
Spurs were bundled out of the Europa League after leading 2 – 0 against Dinamo Zagreb from the first leg.
They are due to play the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, April 25, 2021 against Manchester City.
Mourinho had previously managed Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Real Madrid, earning the sack in many of the clubs.
