A serving member of National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), Mr Udechukwu Ezechukwu has built and donated a modern toilet facility to Gishiri community in Abuja.
Speaking to journalist, the young man who is a 2017 batch A member, said he was impelled to carry out the project because he felt and shared in the plight of the people.
“By the grace of God I constructed two toilet facilities for Gishiri primary health center. What motivated me to carry out this project was the desire to make my own impact and I thank God for giving me the enablement in order to do this. Another thing that motivated me is that this primary health care centre was not having toilet thereby heightening the possibility of patients contracting communicable diseases.
“I belong to the SDG community development service group. I urge the government to intervene to provide basic social amenities for the community so that people from this community don’t have to go all the way to Maitama general hospital for health care.”
Ezechukwu called on the youths and fellow NYSC members to emulate his gesture in order to promote the welfare of their various communities.
“I want to admonish fellow corps members to try and make their contributions to their host communities, no matter how little, it will go a long way to alleviate the suffering of the people.
Ezechukwu further called on the staff and management of the health center to manage the project in a sustainable way.
Commending the corps member for his good work, Muktar Usman Galadima, the Director of development control, FCDA, said the project is not only commendable, it is a sign of patriotism.
“I have told my colleagues to put up a recommendation to the council so that this work is appreciated formally,” Galadima said. “Gishiri is a village situate within Katampe district in the greater Abuja master plan, for now, it is a temporary settlement because time will come when they will have to be relocated and resettled permanently. But for now as human being they need to be taken care of in terms of education and health facilities.”
